Northern 'Southern Gentleman' Baby Shower: The Party!

I am originally from Ohio and have lots of brothers and sisters who still live up there. Justin's brother's family also lives up in Ohio, so it was fun for our family and friends up there to throw a shower for us, so that we could celebrate with all of them. The shower was hosted and held at one of my brother's friend's house, who has become a close family friend for to our entire family. My little brother and sister came from college and even some of my close and very dear college friends who live out of state, traveled all the way to Ohio for the shower!

We had a great time at the shower just relaxing, catching up, eating the delicious food and feeling very blessed by everyone who spoiled our little boy. My little sister, Stephanie, did a great job documenting the shower on my camera, so I will let the pictures do the talking!

38 weeks!

 38 weeks!

Here's the actual bump shot that Justin wanted me to use :)

How far along: 38 weeks! Look who has managed to stick around for 2 weeks :)
Baby is the size of a: Pumpkin. Wow.
Maternity clothes: Really wanting to know what size I will be after I give birth. I have been itching to buy a fun spring dress for my brother's wedding. (The wedding is 3 weeks after my due date).
Food cravings: Chocolate. Chocolate dipped cones (hubs bought me Drumsticks so that I have them readily available at home), chocolate covered marshmallow eggs. Just chocolate in general. The last couple days I cannot seem to stop eating. I feel so hungry all the time and am eating massive amounts. I wouldn't be surprised if I gained 10 pounds this week.
Anything make you queasy or sick: No.
Miss anything: Same as last week: flat stomach, bending over, moving around swiftly.
Boy or Girl: Baby boy!
Movement: The scquirmer is still at it. There have been times that it seems like my stomach is pulsating. I have been trying to figure out what it is. Is it the baby's heartbeat? What type of movement could he be doing that is pulsating? His hiccups are also becoming quite powerful.
Best moment this week: Finishing the baby's room. Oh, how I L.O.V.E it! I will blog post about it soon (after I finish my blogging about Northern Baby Shower). I also loved getting a pedicure after school with my sister on Monday. It was much needed, so relaxing and I loved spending time with her.
Worst moment this week: Waking up for work at 6am. I have been sleeping pretty well lately and would love to sleep longer.
How have I been feeling: Have a little bit of reflux here and there and I am still having the shoots of pain in my legs/ thighs (baby has got to get off of those nerves!) I am still amazed that I am 38 weeks and still have been able to work 9+ hour days... not too bad.
Other tidbits:

  • We are almost completely moved out of our apartment: the only items that remain are our furniture, bathroom, pantry and clothing. A huge thank you to my mom and Jen who packed up our entire kitchen and let me just sit on the couch.
  • The baby's room is completely DONE (with the exception of a picture to hang here and there). It is amazing and I am so thankful to have it! Can't wait to see the little boy in his crib.
  • My parents went up to Ohio this week and I cried both times my mom said bye to me (yes- I did cry on Monday once I got in the car;) Hormones....
  • The little man has managed to stay in a whole 2 weeks since my doctor gave me the fright about him coming in March. Although it is still technically March, I'm impressed that I have gone this long.
  • One of my biggest fears is that after all this talk that I will come early, the baby will actually come late and I will have to be induced.
  • Still praying that he can hold off until at least this weekend, if not April, if not April 6th ;)
  • I got report cards done and am completely ready to give control over in my classroom.
  • As I write this, my husband is cleaning the bathtub for me so that I can go relax... such a sweet guy :)
  • I went 'grocery shopping' at my parent's house. Since they went up to Ohio, they passed all their leftovers off to me. "It must be nice to live near your parents." :)
  • I am almost in the clear of being afraid about going into labor at school. I have to make it 2 more days!
  • I am down one ring :( I took off my engagement ring due to slightly swollen fingers. Still keeping my wedding ring on. I hate not having both of them and refuse to not wear any.
  • Next doctor's appointment is on Friday. We'll see if we have any updates then.
  • Things checked off the to-do list:
    • Bought wedding shower gift for my brother and his fiance and 1st birthday gift for my niece. Bummed that we can't be in Ohio this weekend to celebrate both exciting events, but I don't think traveling at 38 weeks is the best decision.
    • Moved.
    • Finished baby's room!
    • And that's about it- my to-do checklist is just about completed!
Looking forward to: [Hopefully] having some relaxing days of nothing to do before the little man arrives. And of course, meeting him! I can't wait to see Justin as a dad :)
Countdowns:
  • Days until due date: 14!
  • Days left of teaching: 1. 7 (Friday is an early dismissal so it doesn't count as a whole day!)

3.23.2013

37 weeks!

Baby is full term and I made it another week for a bump shot!
(I thought the moving boxes were an appropriate background for this picture since it represents where we are right now.)

How far along: 37 weeks, 3 days! The little man is FULL TERM!
Baby is the size of a: Watermelon. Is is just me or does that seem huge?
Maternity clothes: I'm not buying any more! In fact, I have started looking around at 'regular' clothes :)
Food cravings: Chocolate dipped ice cream cones (either from DQ or McDonalds). I've only gotten one in the past week, but I have wanted one just about every day.
Anything make you queasy or sick: Nope.
Miss anything: Flat stomach, bending over, being able to move around swiftly.
Boy or Girl: BOY!
Movement: Still has his usual squirms and kicks. The other night he was very active and my stomach looked like it was about to explode. Justin made a comment and my response was, "You know it's a life size baby in there!" He seemed to think that was funny and has made that comment everyday since. The little babe is no longer the little gummy bear that we were first introduced to.
Best moment this week: Getting lots of stuff done! The baby's room should be finished today [hopefully!]
Worst moment this week: The random shoots of pain that I have started to get in my upper thighs.
How have I been feeling: Tired, but I have still managed to wake up at 6am everyday and teach a full day. The babe must be sitting on some nerves because I get these shoots of pain that hit me all of a sudden when I'm walking and it will stop me in my tracks!
Other tidbits:
  • Went on our hospital tour!
  • After our hospital tour we had a dinner date at the Biltmore. It was weird to think that it could be our last date before we ever need a babysitter!
  • I am thankful for my mom for coming in to school everyday this past week to help me out. Although yesterday she told she was glad "I gave her Friday off." Haha- I sound like her employer ;)
  • Doctor's appointment went well yesterday- still at 3cm, I have officially 'dropped' and the little guy is further down into his descent. Doctor said he is about 1/2 way down the birth canal and is head down!
  • The doctor asked me if I was doing a natural birth and I told her yes. Her response was that it should be easier for me to go natural since I am nice and 'ripe.' Hmm... I sound like a piece of fruit.
  • The doctor also said my weight was fantastic! Yes! Holding steady at lower +20's weight gain.
  • I think I felt some contractions on Tuesday night. The next day Justin went out and bought snacks for us to take to the hospital (that is him packing his hospital bag!)
  • My mom and I almost bought the same dress for my brother's wedding (from two different stores)! People don't call me my 'mother's daughter' for no reason ;)
  • We have been extremely productive this week:
    • Installed car seat and took it to fire department to check that it was installed correctly.
    • Re-packed my hospital bag and have it sitting near the front door.
    • Started and made excellent progress on the baby's room.
    • Ordered a dresser and glider
    • Buying the glider was an 'extreme couponer' moment- with the wrong price listed and us getting it for lower + coupons + gift cards- we saved about $200! It was awesome!
    • Dresser is assembled thanks to my husband's hard work!
    • Glider is being picked up this weekend!
    • Painted nightstand for baby's room white
    • Booked hotel room for my brother's wedding!
    • Bought other accessories for the baby's room: pillow for glider, hamper, storage containers
    • Washed baby clothes, bedding and blankets
    • Hubs assembled all 3 strollers! He is on an assembly roll :)
    • Bought last minute necessities that we did not have for the babe
    • Started to move our things out of our apartment
    • On the school front I have also been very productive: packed up some of my things and took them home, organized the room for 4th quarter, lesson planned for not only next week, but the week after spring break and made ALL of my sub plans, been assessing students like crazy and finally have all their grades ready for report cards, pulled out resources for 4th quarter, met with interim sub to go over lesson plans and the general functioning of the classroom.
  • I am feeling pretty good on the school front about leaving. All my plans are reading to go. I would just like to get these report cards done and I would feel 100% ready. Still hoping to make it one more week though and take my maternity leave as planned.
  • Justin has been so amazing this week. He has been working so hard getting things ready to move, assembling things for the baby and getting the baby room ready. He is turning into quite the handy man :)
  • Last night, my mom, Jen, Debbie and I spent about 3 hours in the baby's room getting it ready and it was really special  having them there and helping. My mom made the comment that it is amazing to just look around the room and see how the Lord has provided for us, and she is completely right. I never thought I would have the baby's room up and running fully how I dreamed about it, before he was born, and we have managed to get everything I wanted. The Lord is good :)
Looking forward to: Seeing the baby's room finished and just sitting in the glider admiring it. And my last week of school!
Countdowns:
  • Days until due date:18!! That is so close!
  • Days left of teaching:5! 5! 5!

Northern 'Southern Gentleman' Baby Shower: The Decorations!

We are seriously blessed with the most creative and artistic family and friends when it comes to party planning. Seriously. These baby showers have not been your typical 'Let's go to a party store and pick up generic baby shower decorations.' These showers have been set with themes and executed to the smallest, most creative and special details.

I am originally from Ohio, so my three sister in-laws, my sister and a very dear and close friend of the family threw us a baby shower up north about a week ago. We liked to call this our 'Northern Baby Shower.' The theme for the baby shower was "Southern Gentleman" with a color scheme of white, navy blue and and an emerald green, with mustaches thrown in for a fun pop!

Here are the fun invitations that my sister in-law, Kim, created. She is so talented.

The main table was decorated with a blue and white table cloth with butcher paper. The butcher paper had labels, showing what all the different food was, accompanied by little mustaches. My sister in-law, Tessa, was in charge of the decorations, and she did a phenomenal job! The centerpiece was a series of glass vases filled with bluish tinted rocks and white tulips and green mums. The colors matched the color scheme perfectly. Along the windows in the back, there were little pendants and garlands that also matched the colors.

My sister in-law, Sarah was in charge of organizing the food. Sarah definitely has a passion and gift for food and came up with fresh and delicious menu. There was fruit salad that was served in chocolate dipped waffle cones, veggies and dip, homemade pita bread and hummus, chicken salad and croissants, and caprese salad picks. Even though my sister, Jen, could not be there, she added her touch with these little mustache toothpicks for the caprese salad bites. The food was so amazing that I went back for seconds, and maybe even thirds ;)

For dessert, my sister, Hillary, made a very delicate, light and fresh lemon cake with blueberry filling (appropriate for a little boy!). Look at how cute it was decorated for the little Southern Gentleman! Sarah also made these amazing smore cookies that I wish I had taken a bag full home.

The drink table was decorated with a mustache garland. They served belly-ni punch in little champagne glasses and there were also mason jars tied with divine twine and green or blue and white striped party straws, with what else- mustaches!

The decorations in the living room were white frames with pictures of me and Justin, the sonogram, and other little artworks that can be used to decorate the nursery. Tessa did a fabulous job with her circuit! I LOVE how I can now hang these in the nursery and already have decor done! Perfect!

Everyone left the party with a chocolate mustache lollipop, made by the host, Victoria. Victoria opened up her new, gorgeous house for the party and I feel very honored to be the first person to have a party/shower in her house! The lollipops were tied with a blue or green ribbon and had little charms that said "It's a boy!" on them!

Thank you to everyone for your hard work for making this baby shower so special! The theme was so much fun and it was so memorable. Our little Southern Gentleman is surrounded by so much love and we are blessed :)

36 weeks!

This is the first time I took a bump shot and thought "It could be my last one." Oh boy!

How far along: 36 weeks! One month left... maybe!
Baby is the size of a: Crenshaw melon? Doctor said today that he is about 5 1/2-6 lbs. He predicts that he won't be any bigger than 8 lbs at birth.
Maternity clothes: Borrowing more of Justin's shirts to lounge around the house in.
Food cravings: Nope.
Anything make you queasy or sick: I got very sick this week so that made me very nauseous, but nothing related to food.
Miss anything:A flat stomach.
Boy or Girl: Southern Gentleman :)
Movement: Just the same squirms and pokes. Baby was pretty quiet when I got sick earlier this week but boy has he been making up for it since. I can't seem to get him to stop moving!
Best moment this week: Having a wonderful weekend in Ohio with family and friends and our Northern Baby Shower! Such a fun time! I'm excited to blog about it soon :)
Worst moment this week: We got home from Ohio on Sunday evening. At about 3:00 in the morning, Justin and I both woke up and felt nauseous. He started vomiting right away and I joined in on the fun two hours later. The next 5 hours were not.fun.at.all. Later that day, we felt like we were on the movie Contagion. We found out that not only were we sick, but so were 3 of my brothers, 1 sister and 1 sister in-law. Something fun most have been spread to us while we were all up in Ohio, and we all got it around the same time. Being sick and pregnant is the worst. Not only can you not move around as quickly as you need to, but it is hard to find a comfortable position and relax. All day Monday the only thing I ate was about 5 flakes of cereal and felt extremely achy and weak. I took Tuesday off as well and was able to eat a little more, but still feeling very achy and uncomfortable. I went back to work today but hoped that I could have more time off. Still feeling very wiped out and tired.
How have I been feeling: Other than my bout with the Contagion virus, I have felt good!
Other tidbits:
  • We were suppose to have our hospital tour on Monday, but since we were both sick, it is rescheduled for March 20th!
  • Not much has been crossed off our to-do lists with us being out of town and suck up in bed.
  • I did get some more paperwork in order for my maternity leave.
  • Things we hope to accomplish this week: start the nursery, order the glider and dresser.
  • Our bedroom is overflowing with baby items. Justin thinks that this little man owns more stuff the we do.
  • Wedding rings are off at night and on during the day. I hate taking them off.
  • I am now down to weekly doctor's appointments!
  • This week's appointment was very eye opening for many reasons:
    • I am already 3 cm dilated and 70% effaced.
    • The doctor thinks there is no way I am going to make it to my due date and is pretty sure this baby won't even make it to April.... OH BOY!
    • He told me to have my bags packed and ready to go.... good thing I have that checked off!
    • He made the comment, "Wow! This baby is low!" That is what I have been saying the whole time! I hear other people talk about all the kicks they get in the ribs and not me, it is all in the hips. I don't even know if this babe can 'drop' any lower.
    •  After my doctor's appointment I felt excited but also very overwhelmed! We have no nursery and we still have to move. I still have to get lessons and plans in order for the 4th quarter and get report cards done. We need to get our tushes' moving! Although my mom reminded me, I can be dilated for several weeks and it is all in the Lord's hands. We have been praying that He brings him at the right time and so whether that is early or on time, it is going to be okay.
Looking forward to: Starting on the nursery and getting all the baby stuff out of our room!
Countdowns:
  • Days until due date:28!
  • Days left of teaching:12!

35 weeks!

How far along: 35 weeks! 35 more days to go!!
Baby is the size of a: Honeydew melon! He is about 18 inches long and weighs between 5-6 lbs. We got an almost full sized baby in there!
Maternity clothes: My husband got a large t-shirt in the mail from his seminary. He said it was too big for him so he gave it to me. Does anyone else see something wrong with this picture? So now I have a new lounging around shirt to wear!
Food cravings: Not this week!
Anything make you queasy or sick: We had a Digornio pizza for dinner the other night. I woke up in the middle of the night with terrible, burning reflux! The next day I had some leftovers for lunch and I had reflux again and an upset stomach. I am NOT eating that pizza again.
Miss anything: Being able to move around quickly and comfortably. I was also looking in the mirror the other night and I was trying to remember what my body looked like pre-bump. It's funny how you quickly forget. It's like I've had this bump on me for years.
Boy or Girl: Handsome little man!
Movement: He has been very active this week, particularly today! I still love feeling his kicks and squirms and seeing my stomach go lopsided or having little knots poke out. For the most part he is letting me sleep through the night, besides bathroom breaks. I may just be too exhausted from the day that I don't feel him move at night.
Best moment this week: We had another snow day again today! And with taking Friday off to go up to Ohio, I only had to work 3 days this week. Well I still worked today, but not having kids is like a day off.
Worst moment this week: Seeing my husband on average for only an hour or less a day. He finishes his 2nd semester of seminary on Friday. 2/3 of the way done! I am excited to actually have an 8 hour car ride, just so that I can be with him for a long period of time.
How have I been feeling: Tired and big. Otherwise, very happy and excited! I've been reading up on labor and delivery and taking care of a newborn. Although I am still nervous and a little scared, I am feeling more prepared. I am definitely ready and excited to meet this little guy!
Other tidbits:
  • We have our hospital tour scheduled for Monday!
  • My interim substitute has been chosen.
  • We narrowed down a glider and will hopefully be purchasing it in the next week, along with a dresser.
  • Justin started feeling the pressure of how quickly the baby is coming and he made his own to-do list this week!
  • Things I checked off my to-do list:
    • Wash baby clothes to pack hospital bag
    • Packed diaper bag for the baby- we are being prepared just in case he makes his debut while we are in Ohio this weekend!
    • Bought necessities for myself and packed my hospital bag
    • Made thank-you cake pops for my co-workers
  • It looks like we will be moving into Justin's mom's house toward the end of this month- Debbie is going to start painting the nursery!
  • I bought the last materials I need to make a DIY project for the nursery. I'm excited to start on it this next week, hopefully!
  • Debbie made some adorable artwork for the nursery! I've only seen a picture of it but I cannot wait to see it in person!
  • I'm very excited to actually start this nursery and see it come together!
  • Justin bought "Bringing up Boys" by James Dobson on audio cd so that we can listen [or sleep to it] on our 8 hour drive.
  • We are installing the car seat tomorrow.... oh boy!
Looking forward to: Going to Ohio in 2 days and seeing my family and friends that I have not seen in a long time!
Countdowns:
  • Days until due date:35
  • Days left of teaching:17!
  • Days until Northern Baby Shower: 3!!
